SWIMMING FREE – King Penguin Swimming

I was asked to sculpt a series of bronze wildlife sculptures of King penguins for a family who had lived in the Falklands for over 30 years.  They have a thriving gallery and wanted to provide their many overseas visitors with something which symbolised the Falklands.   What better wildlife than the King Penguins.

I was unable to visit the Falklands, and so had to pay a number of visits to our local zoo to study these amazing creatures. Not such an interesting destination, but the subject matter made up for it!  This bronze sculpture shows a King penguin swimming as they do this with such grace.  They make multiple dives, usually to a depth of over 100 metres, and will not immediately resurface.   Instead they spend up to just about 5 minutes underwater on some dives, investigating the seabed for prey.  They spend over 75% of their time in the water, swimming at about 4-8 miles per hour…so quite fast!  Penguins are known   as ‘flightless birds’ – and there are about 19 different species.

This bronze wildlife sculpture of a King penguin swimming tries to show how they twist and turn through the water at speed. I hope one day to visit them in the Falklands.  There are many penguins frequenting the beaches, and indeed a number of my sculptures in the art gallery there!  They can be bought as a limited edition resin  and this sculpture has a Bath stone base.  It is part of a series of penguins I have done, all of the King Penguin.
