LOVING MY MASTER – Standing Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Background
Staffordshire Bull Terriers are so not what they seem. It was hard for me to portray their tough looking body without losing their amazing love and adoration to us humans.
This breed originated from Staffordshire and were cross bred between a Bulldog and the English White Terrier. As we probably all know, they were bred as a fighting dog until it was banned as far back as 1835.
Sculpture
This bronze animal sculpture was a commission for someone who wanted to have a lasting memory for their elderly Staffordshire Bull Terrier. It was important to show the essence of this breed, which is one of strength and power. I wanted to show no aggression in the face. I realised these dogs are incredibly gentle souls, and now I see why they are so often misunderstood! Their powerful and strong faces do not portray their nature.
It was a very tricky sculpture to do, but I enjoyed getting to know Staffies, through drawings, photographs and many hours of observation.
I worked on this piece in clay, and then had it cast at a foundry in Dorset as a limited edition. Whilst this bronze sculpture looks very elegant in a sitting room, it can look equally good outside on a plinth. This sculpture is cast as a limited edition in bronze resin.
