SPEED – Racing Greyhound

During the 1920s and ’30s, greyhound racing was a very popular pastime after the war for mainly working class people as it was one of the only legal means of betting.  However, during recent years, greyhound racing has suffered as tracks have closed due to the growing availability of betting on other competitive sports.

Greyhound dogs are bred to race and so I could not resist portraying this bronze animal sculpture in full speed.  I have only seen greyhounds on a track once and it wasn’t something I hugely enjoyed, but seeing them running in the field or garden, with all the freedom, is a great spectacle.

When greyhounds become pets, they are often retired from racing, and enjoy a life on the sofa which is why they are great companions for the elderly.  Rather ironic, considering what they were bred to do!

This bronze sculpture shows the movement of the greyhound in high speed.  It had to be dynamic and graceful, like the greyhound breed as they race through the fields.  In some ways it’s a very structured sculpture, with lots of triangles and ‘s’ shapes and parallel lines which I love to employ when I have such a dynamic sculpture to create.

The best place I have seen my bronze sculpture is positioned in the middle of a board table…perhaps it has helped set the scene for many discussions and deals!
