SLEEPING STAFFY– Lying Staffordshire Bull Terrier
Background
This sculpture of a dog was a commission for a client who was very fond of their ageing Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Whilst I was keen to show the essence of this breed, which is one of strength and power, I wanted to show no aggression. I realised these dogs are incredibly gentle souls, and now I see why they are so often misunderstood! Their powerful looks do not portray their nature!
They are about 16 inches tall, and weigh around 30 pounds, so they are rock solid and very muscular Terriers with a short head which is broad, and lovely pronounced cheek muscles.
Staffordshire Bull Terriers still look very similar to the fighters who once ruled England’s fighting pits. But nowadays, breeders are producing very sweet-natured family dogs and they are amazing with children. But their fighting instincts do remain and so it’s essential they are socialised as puppies with other dogs to learn positive canine manners (something we did not manage with our own dogs!)
Sculpture
It was a very tricky sculpture to do, but I enjoyed getting to know Staffies. I did a lot of drawings, watching the way they moved, and took endless photos. I had to re-work the piece several times, until I was totally happy. So here is a gentle giant sleeping, oblivious to the world around him!
I worked on this piece in wax, and then had it cast at a foundry in Dorset as a limited edition. This bronze sculpture looks very elegant in a sitting room or on a slim shelf as its quite long and thin. It can be cast as a limited edition in either bronze, or bronze resin.
Finishes: Please note that the images shown are purely an indication of how a piece may look and the colour of the finish may vary.
