WAR HORSE – Head of a Horse (half life-size)

This equestrian bronze sculpture of a horse head was sculpted in self hardening clay which is very rough and grainy.  This was great as it forced me to be less focused on the detail.  As a result, this sculpture focuses more on the essence of what I was wanting to express.

Some of you may have seen ‘War Horse’ by Michael Morpurgo on stage at some point in your life.   The puppet of Joey the horse has been a lasting image in my head.  I remember watching the puppet on stage and I was drawn in and become very attached to it as it came alive. This equestrian sculpture is a slightly idealised head of a horse and it lends itself to the rich iron colour which heightens the power and strength. The horse’s head is mounted on a plinth made of Sherborne stone.

It’s a versatile equestrian sculpture which can look perfect inside – in an alcove or on a side board.  It can also be placed outside in a court yard and this is where we have this sculpture.  The rust finish looks great against the cream flagstones. However, he can also be cast in bronze or bronze verdigris and portrays similar drama.
