BIG SOFTY – Head of a Bull Terrier (life-size)
Background
The Bull Terrier was originally developed in the 19th century as a fighting dog and, later, a fashionable companion for gentlemen, but these days they’re a family companion and are distinguished by their long Roman nose.
This dog is a lover, not a fighter and so misunderstood as a breed of dog. In fact, Bull Terriers are known for being affectionate to all the members of their household. Their friendliness and love of people also means they don’t like to be left alone for long periods, though.
Sculpture
I have a very special love for this breed and so I went out of my way to find a couple of bull terriers to sculpt. I spent a number of afternoons in a friend’s kitchen, watching these amazing dogs. They played together, made me laugh, and often slept – after a mad spurt of activity!
They are funny, gentle, intelligent and full of life – a great combination which is often all held in their face. This was why I wanted to focus on the Terrier’s head, and through a majestic stance – with the head slightly twisted…you can see their magic. I have exaggerated their large ears, and long nose and their gentle eyes.
This sculpture is a limited edition in bronze resin, mounted on a Sherborne stone plinth.
