This equestrian bronze sculpture of a horse head was sculpted in self hardening clay which was very rough and grainy which was great as it forced me to be less focused on the detail and more on the essence of what I was wanting to say.
Some of you may have seen ‘War Horse’ on stage at some point in your life and the puppet of the Joey has been a lasting image in my head, as I remember watching the puppet on stage just draw you in and become very emotional. Its a slightly idealised head of a horse and it lends itself to the rich iron colour which heightens the power and strength that horses convey. It can look perfect inside – in an alcove or on a side board, or it can be placed outside in a court yard, perhaps on a metal stand. This is how we have this horse head, and the rust colour looks great against the cream flagstones. However, he can also be cast in bronze or bronze verdigris and portrays similar drama.
